The Name of the Rose
Umberto Eco's 1980 novel sends William of Baskerville, a Franciscan friar with a taste for empirical reasoning, to a fourteenth-century abbey where monks are dying in suspicious ways. The mystery is an excuse for debates about heresy, Aristotle, laughter, and the proper relationship between knowledge and power. Eco, a medieval scholar, stuffed the book with Latin inscriptions, theological disputes, and monastic politics, then watched it sell millions, which annoyed some people and delighted others. The labyrinthine library at the novel's center is almost a character in its own right. It is a book that asks the reader to keep up, and rewards the ones who miss the pleasure of being outclassed by a novel.
