Crimes of the Heart
Beth Henley's Pulitzer-winning play, in the Penguin paperback, gathers three sisters in a Mississippi kitchen on a birthday that also happens to be the day one of them shoots her husband. The comedy is Southern in its pacing and its tolerance for damage, but Henley is less interested in gothic atmosphere than in the small negotiations by which sisters keep from destroying one another. Penguin's edition is spare and readable, with no heavy critical apparatus. For readers who like family drama that understands grief can be funny without being trivial.
