Louise Erdrich's novel returns to the reservation world of her earlier books, following Lipsha Morrissey as he falls for Shawnee Ray and tries to choose between love, money, tradition, and the pull of the new bingo palace. The story moves between past and present with the accumulation of family history that marks Erdrich's best fiction. The prose is lyrical without being soft, and the moral questions are left where they belong: unresolved. The book works best if you know the earlier novels, but it holds its own as a study in divided loyalties. Ideal reader: the reader who believes that desire and duty are usually the same trouble looked at from different angles, or the fan of Erdrich's North Dakota families.
