Philip Roth's 1971 satire reimagines the Nixon administration as a burlesque starring Trick E. Dixon, a president whose piety and paranoia are matched only by his gift for offending everyone in reach. Roth wrote it while the Watergate scandal was unfolding, which gives the jokes a fury that hindsight would have softened. The targets are obvious, the prose is not; the book is angrier than it is funny, and more honest than either.Random House published the novel in hardcover at the height of Roth's early notoriety. A period piece now, but its disgust with political performance has not aged as much as one might hope; for readers who miss the old American appetite for public disgrace.
