Cloud 9
Caryl Churchill's Cloud 9, published by Theatre Communications Group, uses cross-gender and cross-racial casting to collapse two colonial eras into one another. Act One is set in Victorian Africa, Act Two in 1979 London, and the same actors reappear in different roles with the same relationships, as if empire and sexual politics were still working out the same bad script. Churchill's writing is brisk, economical, and brutal; the TCG edition presents the play cleanly, without much supplementary material. For readers who want a theatre text that refuses to let its audience settle into easy moral positions.
