Toni Morrison's 1987 novel is set in post-Civil War Ohio, where Sethe lives with her daughter Denver and the persistent, possibly supernatural presence of a baby she killed to spare from slavery. The prose moves between memory and haunting with a rhythm that demands attention. It is not an easy read, nor is it trying to be.The Plume edition keeps the novel in wide circulation in a standard paperback format. It is a major American novel in a completely ordinary body, which may be part of the point: the book does not need a grander container than the one it already has. For readers willing to be unsettled and then changed, and who understand that some hauntings are not questions to be answered but presences to be lived beside.
