A West Virginia University Press paperback that examines the stretch of Appalachia above the Mason-Dixon line, a region that is technically Appalachia and technically not. Matthew Ferrence, born in western Pennsylvania, uses memoir, geology, and regional history to question how a place gets classified and who benefits from the classification. The book is modestly produced, as university press books tend to be, with a cover that looks like it was designed on a budget. That modesty suits the argument. Ideal reader: the reader who grew up somewhere that was neither city nor country and resented being told which it was.
